Dear Hongrang
A drama in Joseon era is always a nice alternative to the current day Seoul based dramas. This historical drama filled with hidden truths, mysteries and strong family bonds. Twelve years after his disappearing at eight years old the son of a merchant family comes back home claiming to be who he is supposed to be -Hangrong this is– but alas, he has no recollection of his past. He finds his half sister living in dire condition under her abusive stepmother, like a new Cinderella and neglected by her father. Her goal is tot find the truth about her brother disappearance, curious about the fact ht he had grown up rather like a real prince. This new Korean drama is an adaptation of the wonderful novel Donggeum Swallowing Gold and like every novel adaptation it has a strong foundation and a compelling story line.
Second Shot At Love
On a more serious note this drama is about second chances and how one can escape and build a new life just like our heroine struggle to escape a family of alcoholics that interfere with her work. You all know that Korean dramas are not just easy to watch with beautiful actors but under the surface always are hidden serious social themes. That’s the beauty of Korean dramas in a nutshell. Even if she is considered a woman who can drink better than any man–did I stumble upon some gender discrimination here?– she is abstaining from drinking. At some point she meets a doctor from a prestigious hospital in Seoul who is now relocated for his own reasons to the village. Their paths are destined to cross. The doctor believes that alcohol can ruin lives– which is true if I may add. The small rural Korean town people and their mentality are carried over this drama and embrace the love story between the two lead characters.

How To Decide Which New Drama to Watch

A promise is a promise. Here are some additional, less conventional ideas to help you decide which one of the hot new Korean dramas to watch this month and beyond I am teaching you a skill here people read along:
- Watch the Director’s Previous Work : Instead of focusing solely on the stellar and glittering cast, take a look at the director’s filmography. You might be surprised. Have they directed movies, critically acclaimed shorts, or even unique web series? A director often brings a distinct visual style, narrative pacing, and thematic focus. If you like their previous works, the new drama might too, regardless of the specific genre.
- Analyze the Vibe of the OST Before Episode 1: Listen to the Official Soundtrack (OST) released before the drama airs. How does the music feels? Generic, or it has that unique tone that hints at the drama’s mood? A powerful or distinct OST can often be clue of a drama’s quality and emotional depth. If the music gives you that something then this drama might be your next obsession.
- Look at the Production Company’s Track Record: You might don’t know it but production companies might develop reputation for specific types of dramas or for adapting webtoons. Researching the production company can offer some clues about potential quality. Are they known for high-budget Korean drama series or more subtle low key, character-driven stories?
- Read the Original Source Material’s If the drama is based on a webtoon, novel, or web novel, well read that webtoon. Don’t you want to read in case of spoilers then explore discussions among fans of the original material. Dedicated readers have strong opinions on how well (or poorly) the adaptation captures the spirit of the original work. This can give you insight into plot points and and characters.
- The “First 5 Minutes” Test: If trailers aren’t enough, then simly commit to watching only the first five minutes of an episode. Does it grab your attention? Is the cinematography intriguing? Does the initial setup make you curious? Sometimes, a drama reveals its potential just from the very beginning. If the first few minutes feel.. flat, it might not be for you.
Those are a few ideas to get your started. Watch the one you like the most either with subtitles or English dubbed. Which are yours? Do you have a process to decide which one of the hot new korean dramas are you going to watch or you just pick up one at random?
