Get your popcorn ready,🍿 drama queens and kings. This time we’ll get our hands on a Dare to Love Me K-drama. The series deals with the unexpected romance between Shin Yoon-bok, a proper Confucian scholar, and Kim Hong-do, a modern-day fashion designer struggling with her work environment.✨ It sounds intriguing, isn”t it? 🤯 A recipe for hilarious misunderstandings and heart-fluttering moments!Let’s see of that’s the case.
First things first. The performances.Kim Myung-soo delivers a standout performance as Yoon-bok. He masterfully embodies the character’s old-fashioned mannerisms and speech. Many of the show’s comedic highlights are based upon his fish-out-of-water moments navigating modern life. Which of course is a plus.
In contrast, Lee Yoo-young’s portrayal of Hong-do is uneven. Feels rush. While she manages to capture the character’s angst and worries -regarding her mistreatment at work, her emotional outbursts and behavior veers to a caricature…
The opposing personalities are the best asset of the drama. They can lead to hilarious laughs.😂 For example, their initial meeting in a café, where Yoon-bok rejects Hong-do’s advances, sets the stage for an entertaining push-and-pull dynamic. Therefore as their paths continue to cross, their slow-burning romance takes shape.
However, “Dare to Love Me” struggles to capitalize on its, admittedly, intriguing premise. The show’s pacing is uneven.😕 Some episodes feel overstuffed with plot points while others feel empty. There are instances when the secondary storyline, between a cultural artifact theft case and Hong-do’s workplace, overshadow the romance. And this is supposed to be a romantic comedy.
Furthermore, the drama’s aesthetic merit and cinematography seem inconsistent. Some scenes feel sloppily edited. This leads to further unevenness to the supporting cast. There are actors delivering stronger performances than others.
Overall, “Dare to Love Me” benefits only from the charisma of the lead actors 😍,and the performances of the supporting cast. However, the drama doesn’t fully realize its potential. Even if fans of the two leading stars and the genre may find some enjoyment in this charming, but severely flawed, romantic comedy, there are a few better choices to binge-watch.
